WTS was the organizer of a conference on the protection of biotechnological inventions
WTS Patent Attorneys was the organizer of the conference entitled “Evaluation of biotechnological inventions by the European Patent Office- selected problems. Biotechnological inventions in Polish industry”, which took place on September 30, 2009 in Warsaw.
The conference was targeted to Polish patent attorneys, experts from the Polish Patent Office and persons interested in commercializing biotechnological solutions. It was led by practicing experts from the EPO who shared their experiences in the protection of biotechnological solutions in the European Union. Its role and the goals of this institution were presented by Mr. Enrique Molina-Galan, director of the biological section in the Hague. The application procedure before the EPO was presented by Ms. Kirsten Niebuhl-Eber. Dr. Sabine Novak-Giese presented a lecture on the practical aspects connected with inventions based on stem cells, whereas Dr. Jacob W. Celler spoke of the protection of inventions relating to protein expression systems.
During the second part of the seminar, scientists working in Polish biotechnological companies presented their take on the role of patent protection in the development and commercialization of Polish biotechnological inventions. The speakers were Prof. Jarosław Dastych, the president of Proteon Pharmaceuticals and the founder and president of Bio-Tech Consulting, Dr. Tadeusz Pietrucha.
The participants in the discussion indicated the growing importance in everyday life and the increasing complexity of biotechnological innovation. In light of the increased significance of European patents in Poland, it was particularly interesting to exchange experiences with the EPO experts visiting the conference. The talks made by the representatives of Polish innovative companies were also interesting as they brought their industry perspectives to the discussion.
